Robert Downey Jr. Talks 'Iron Man 3'

EW.com recently interviewed Robert Downey Jr, taking advantage of the famed actor’s frankness in order to gather info regarding Iron Man 3.

Robert Downey Jr. really needs no introduction. He’s always been something of an oddball and professional risk in Hollywood, but the actor has really come into his own and cashed in on his talent. With 2008’s Iron Man, the follow up in 2010’s Iron Man 2, and last year’s The Avengers, Robert Downey Jr. has set precedents of fame and success that may never be touched on by another actor while simultaneously showing the world how charming his persona can be when applied to characters.

Iron Man 3 will be a continuation of that success (no doubt), and two-time Oscar winner is not at all shy about discussing the film. When asked about action sequences under new director Shane Black, Robert Downey Jr.’s giddiness towards the project really shines through.

“We’ve just been talking about one sequence – the top-secret name is the Boot/Glove Sequence, I can tell you that, just between you and me – it’s where Tony only has one gauntlet and one boot and he has to escape multiple captors,” the actor said. “It’s really fun, dude. We’re taking everything from his first gauntlet test in the first movie up through the most extreme stuff we thought up for Iron Man 2 and The Avengers and pulling on all of it and making this one big, extended challenge of physics.”

Iron Man 3 will introduce a new slew of actors into the franchise, including Guy Pearce, James Badge Dale, Rebecca Hall and Ben Kingsley. The film will also keep up with returning actors Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Jon Favreau. Robert Downey Jr. is keen on highlighting the importance of Cheadle’s character, the unforgettable James Rhodes, better known as War Machine or simply “Rhodey”.

“Rhodey is much more in the dead center of things, he’s much more dynamic,” Downey Jr. said. “We’ve made this decision that while Tony is a technical guy, he’s not really a trained guy. There’s a lot of fun to be had with Don because he’s really good with hardware and he’s a martial artist, so it’s been really fun exploiting this possibility of Tony having moments like the one in Avengers, like the one with Cap where he decides, “Oh screw it, he probably knows what he’s doing.” So there’s a lot of that and a lot more fun and a lot more depth to Rhodey this time around.”

Iron Man 3 is set to hit theaters May 3, a date seen as not soon enough by avid comic book fans and fans of the franchise. We’ll be sure to keep you updated, as the film’s marketing campaign seems to be in full swing.
