New Name and Release Date for 'Jack the Giant Killer'

Do the release date shuffle! THR reports that, since Elysium has had its opening shifted three weeks earlier, there’s gap in Warner Bros.’s schedule for next year, and they’ve decided to fill that gap with Jack the Giant Killer. Whoops, make that Jack the Giant Slayer, as Warner and New Line have also made a slight semantic adjustment to the title. Apparently this makes it “more family friendly.” Whatever they say.*

Jack the Giant Killer Slayer is now set to open March 1, 2013. Like G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Great Gatsby, Gangster Squad, and a lot of other films, it was originally supposed to come out this year, but has been delayed. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Bill Nighy, and Ewan MacGregor. It’s an adaptation of the “Jack and the beanstalk” fairy tale. Bryan Singer directs. Will it stand above all the useless tripe that’s signified fairy tale movies of late? Time will tell.

*Actually, all snark aside, I won’t miss an opportunity to exercise my otherwise worthless English degree. And in my opinion, “slay” does indeed have a softer “feel” to it than “kill.” So I guess they’re slightly onto something. That being said, I don’t think any child was ever warped by their word choice when it came to describing the taking of life.
