Kobe and Vanessa Bryant – To Divorce or Not To Divorce?

Are Kobe Bryant and his wife Vanessa moving along with the divorce? Well, Vanessa Bryant was spotted at a charity event without her wedding ring. Proof positive that she and hubby Kobe Bryant are divorcing, right?

Not by a long shot.

The couple posed hand-in-hand for their 2012 Christmas card; neither of them wearing their wedding rings. Many speculate that their relationship is rocks and the pair is this close to divorce court. However, rings or not, if the couple’s new Christmas card is any indication, they definitely have plans to stay out of divorce court. Vanessa and the girl looks gorgeous in their ladies-only Christmas picture. And in the Bryant family Christmas card, husband and father Kobe was surrounded by his ladies in classic tuxedo. The pair even have a separate picture, with Vanessa sitting triumphantly on Kobe’s lap.

If that’s what divorce looks like, then marriage must be heaven.

After a ringless Vanessa attended the charity event, she was front row – and still ringless – with her daughters at the Christmas Day LA Lakers game.

All this divorce talk began in 2011 after Mrs. Bryant filed against her husband. She alleged that her MVP Laker husband of nearly a decade had, among other things, cheated on her with over 100 women. Kobe’s fidelity isn’t as airtight as his jumpers and he proved so in 2003. He was accused of rape in Colorado as a hotel worker brought charges against him after they had a sexual encounter. Kobe has always maintained that the one-time deal was consensual and he was innocent of the charges; which where dropped in 2004 when the alleged victim refused to testify against him.

The state may have dismissed the charges, but surely his wife didn’t. For sticking by him during that humiliating time, Kobe gifted her a $4 million dollar ring. It would have been nice to get the ring without the stigma behind it, but Vanessa accepted it and life went on.

That is until 2011 when Bryant filed for divorce.

Since then, the couple has been on again, off again as they look to rebuild their family. Having been her high school sweetheart, sources close to Vanessa say that she just wants to remain married to Kobe; but she’s no fool. The divorce was a way to gain his attention and by all means, she has it now. Friends close to the couple report that while they look happy in public, they have a lot of work to do on their marriage behind the scenes.

So, they are basically saying that the Bryant’s marriage is like any other marriage in this country and it takes work?

No news there.

Anyhow, for now the Vanessa and Kobe Bryant divorce rumors are just that…rumors. Hopefully the couple can overcome their differences and remain together – if for no other reason than to keep giving us amazingly gorgeous family Christmas cards year after year.

Democracy needs journalism it can trust.

This election season, the stakes are higher than usual — and so is the pressure on newsrooms to soften their coverage, stay quiet, or just disappear. Independent reporting, the kind that answers to readers instead of advertisers or political pressure, matters more in a moment like this, not less.

For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed independent and reader-funded. We have no corporate owner and no shareholders telling us what to cover or how to cover it. That independence is also our biggest vulnerability: nothing protects it except readers choosing to fund it directly.

Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under in a moment like this, it's rarely the independent, reader-funded ones that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
