Serena Williams Wimbledon Favorite Over Caroline Wozniacki

Caroline Wozniacki may hold the number one ranking in women’s tennis, but Serena Williams appears to be the heavy favorite to win. Serena Williams hasn’t played in a grand slam since injuring her foot in a freak accident last year. Serena made her comeback just last week when she was outed in the second round of the 2011 AEGON International. Still, tennis pundits are stating the women’s draw at Wimbledon is wide open placing both Serena Williams and sister Venus Williams as heavy favorites. Maria Sharapova is another contender who’s launching her comeback since undergoing shoulder surgery in 2008.   Sharapova is a heavy favorite behind the Serena and Venus.

Sharapova says of the possibility of facing Serena and/or Venus,

“They’ve been champions here for many years. They’re obviously the ones to beat on grass. They’ve been out for a while so it’s definitely great to have them back.”

“It’s the matchups that the people look forward to. They expect to see great tennis.”

Serena isn’t feeding into the news stating,
“It would be awesome and amazing to win, but that’s not my thought process. My thought process is just to play the best I can and to be positive.”

“I’m happy to have been here. Like we were saying, six or seven weeks of just trying to get myself together isn’t a tremendous amount of time, but the fact that I can even compete and be in a position I wasn’t sure I’d have a chance to be at again is more than enough.”

Caroline Wozniacki is hoping to win but knows it will be tough against the Williams sisters she stated last week,

“Obviously no one wants to play them. They have the experience and play really well, especially on grass,” Wozniacki said.

“It’s good that they got a higher seed than their rankings because no one wants to play them in the early rounds.

Wimbledon matches began today with Venus taking the court and coming out a victor in a daring outfit – that we do like!

Can Serena Williams or Venus Williams pull the ultimate upset? If so, what does that say for women’s tennis??
